The Last Lecture
‘The Last Lecture’ by Randy Pausch
ಮೂರು ವರ್ಷ ಹಿಂದೆ ಓದಿದ್ದು, ಇಂದೂ ನೆನಪಾಗುವಂತದ್ದು
I read this book 3 years ago. Many of the thoughts here are from that period. At the end I added what it is to me today.
Of late, reading habits are really dying. I know it is an artificial statement. Whatever we know and do not act upon can never be real. Probably, when we are certain about the day we pack up we may do it. Not all of us might be fortunate (in misfortune) and as determined as Late Randy Pausch. Just I read this book by him ‘The Last Lecture’ almost in one go. I do not know in the recent past, when I read a book at a stretch with such a speed.
Randy Pausch a computer professor, diagnosed with pancreatic cancer with dozen tumors in his body comes to know he hardly has few months to live. He was prioritizing his limited time before the inevitable, considering he has to leave behind his loving wife and three infant children. In the meanwhile, he accepts to give a lecture at the university he taught. He decides to talk on his childhood and his growing days. Despite Randy knew and announces to the world the fact, he decided to live happily the moments he had on his hand. He doesn’t talk about dying. He talks about ‘achieving childhood dreams’. The whole approach surrounds on what is important that needs focus. For me this is the whole strength and center point of this book.
Although the certainty of the future was sad for the one who wanted to live and for the family to give bid adieu to him, story given by Randy backwards from child hood is quite amazing. How self-make up support of parenthood, fundamentals in the approach of football coach never hesitating to say wrong as wrong, making the student know of his pitfalls by the professor, not giving importance to things you break in bringing up childhood, not to make effort in covering few dents in material wealth are treat to read in the book.
Randy has beautifully narrated on, how to allow children or students to dream what they want to be and never impose on them anything. There are lot of treasures in this book on wide range of values.
Nothing is a brick wall when there is true love;
Your true passion determines what you will be;
How and what to read about students;
Encourage people not to get scared about failures while attempting great things;
How to make people bond for the purpose in a team;
These I felt were treat to read.
How university – public – Disney land like things – NASA - can work in a combo, how learnings can be made purposeful in great universities, importance of gratitude, never to live for what others think about us, talk straight on face and never talk behind, first focus on what is important, our commitment to society are reflected so well and deep from the heart.
Loved to be in the journey of this reading, often questioning distance of mine in each and every area I identified above.
Some books really made me to apply few things. After 3 years of reading
this book, I am sure in saying, this is one such book.
